EI Scale: Extraversion (E) and Introversion (I)

Karl Jung in his scale represented people reacting to interaction with the external environment. Extroverts, he called those who are comfortable to live in society. It is a pleasure to communicate with different people.

Introverts, on the contrary, prefer to live alone, avoiding frequent contact with society. According to Jung, a person may express inclinations of both an introvert and an extrovert, but at the same time he will relate only to a certain group.

In simple words, the EI scale tells about the general orientation of consciousness:

  • E (extrovert) - orientation to external objects;
  • I (introvert) - orientation inward, towards oneself.

Scale SN: Sensory (S) and Intuition (N)

The SN scale is designed to collect information from the external environment. Absolutely all people, both introverts and extroverts, use common sense in their life (or sensation, that is, something that can be touched and passed through their experience) and intuition. But still, according to the test, Myers-Briggs, a person can relate to only one type.

People like S prefer to rely on common sense and use their own senses. They pay more attention to reality, accumulating experience and trusting only facts.

People prone to intuitive thinking N are more interested in impressions and schemes. As a rule, they like to create abstract theories and reflect on a global future, viewing the whole picture of the world.

In simple terms, the SN scale reflects the chosen way of orientation in a situation:

  • S (sensorics) - orientation to the facts and the experience gained;
  • N (intuition) - focus on premonitions, general information.

Thinking (T) and Feeling (F)

People of type T when making decisions are guided by their experience and knowledge. When thinking, they stop their attention on objective data, relying on logical thinking.

And those people who are subject to the feelings of F, make decisions and make actions based on emotions and feelings.

In simple terms, the TF scale on how a person makes decisions:

  • T (thinking, logic) - the ability to rationally weigh the pros and cons;
  • F (feeling, ethics) - decisions are made emotionally.

Judgment (J) and Perception (P)

Through this scale, you can find out how this or that person interacts with the external environment. Solid and analyzed solutions for those individuals who primarily prefer to think and analyze J.

People of type P are more prone to perception. As a rule, they are very open, so it is easier for them to adapt to a particular situation or society.

In simple terms, the JP scale shows how the solution is prepared:

  • J (judgment and rationality) - planning and sequencing;
  • P (perception and irrationality) - the desire to navigate according to circumstances, the ability to adapt.

Features of the Myers-Briggs test

The main difference between the Myers-Briggs test and other testing systems is that this system is not, in fact, a test. There are no right or wrong answers in it, since all types are absolutely equal among themselves.

Another difference is that the final results do not compare with any template and are not checked according to certain standards. The Myers-Briggs system only provides detailed information about the features of an individual.

Questions of psychological testing

During testing, the entire procedure must meet certain conditions.

  1. You must have the appropriate equipment: a testing program, a computer, etc.
  2. Test participants must undergo a special briefing before answering questions.
  3. It is necessary to establish in advance certain terms of passing the test.

In order to get reliable results, a professional must perform the Myers-Briggs test. For this reason, large organizations are willing to pay any costs to meet all the conditions of testing.

Myers-Briggs System Reliability

Although the system itself has proven itself on the positive side, according to some studies, it has weaknesses. For example, people who passed the Myers-Briggs test for the second time showed completely different results.

The National Research Council explains this by the fact that during the testing process, Myers-Briggs did not conduct research in programs on the orientation of the professional.

That is, in fact, their typology, built on ineffective techniques.

Criticism of the Myers-Briggs Test

The collected practical data from highly qualified psychologists have shown that certain types of scales do not function at the clinical diagnostic level.

According to E. F. Abelskoy, the results are applicable for a sociological survey, but in no case for an individual.

She argued that inaccuracies could have a negative impact on the determination of any particular type of individual.

Also, the Myers-Briggs system type indicator was criticized because of the distribution of answers, since with such a development of events, the mass of people can be attributed to different types with a small difference in measurements. In turn, this also increases the chances of errors and inaccuracies.
